7) [Throughout the night, Charlie, Itchy, and the dog slaves are wandering around. Suddenly, they stop at the river.]

Carface: Leading us to a dead end! This is deception!

Charlie: Quiet, Carface! You’ll wake Mr. Howard and his men and Stacia up!

[Suddenly, Stacia has snuck out of there despite being grounded.]

Stacia: [sleepily] I was unable to sleep, so I overheard my uncle tell you to take the slaves and go. Suddenly, I’m coming with you, if you approve. I’ve had it with how he treats you all and denies you food and water.

Charlie: Feel free to join us, Stacia. Besides, Itchy and I are actually guardian angels. Of course, we, or at least I, anyway, don’t really act it all the time, but in the end, I’ll always do the right thing. And I’m glad you survived that last plague.

Stacia: One more thing, Chuck. I’ve always wanted a dog for a companion. Why don’t you be mine when this is over?

Charlie: Stacia, I would, but I have family of my own who will be needing me by the time this is over.

[Back inside, Horace has woken up screaming.]

Horace: I’ve got more oil palms to produce and now I have nobody extra to help! I lost my future helper, and my men, which I don’t have very many of, have lost the oldest of theirs… Men! Get up! Let’s get back after those dogs and get them back! I should never have released them!

[Back in San Francisco, Annabelle the Younger, Laila, and Katrina are feeling worried and cannot sleep.]

Katrina: Annabelle, I can’t sleep.

Laila: I can’t sleep either.

Annabelle B.: Neither can I.

Katrina: Oh, dad. Please come home.

[A tear begins falling from her cheek.]

[Back in Sasha’s room, she lowers her head.]

Sasha: Oh, Charlie, please hurry home.

[Now, back to the Amazon…]

Annabelle the Whippet Angel:  [as footfalls are heard] Charles! Use the miracle dog tag and split the river into two pieces.

[Charlie takes it out. It shines, and then the river divides into two, forming a dry path for them to walk on.]

Charlie: Okay, troops! There is dry land to get through! Now, let’s run!

[Charlie runs out into the dry path.]

Itchy: [trying to catch up with Charlie] Hey, Charlie! Wait up! Short legs!

[Stacia catches Itchy and scoops him up while running up to catch up with Charlie.]

[Right to Horace and his five men. They are fascinated to see the Amazon River being divided into two regions, forming a dry path]

Palm Oil Man #1: I can understand the Meeting of Waters, with the Rio Negro joining that river without mixing, but never that!

Horace: [seeing that Stacia is joining the dogs] How dare you defy me, Stacia Black, when you knew you were grounded! You are so going to get grounded even longer! I’ll ground you forever!

[As they are running through the river, about six seconds later, we find out that the same puppy one of the men had tried to drown earlier has fallen off his mother’s back. He whimpers. Horace sees this and chuckles.]

Horace: Nobody will stop me from drowning you this time, midget!

Mother Dog: [looking back] Stop! My poor baby!

[Charlie looks back and sees this.]

Charlie: Stacia, come with me, for you may be needed for part of this! The rest of you, keep going!

[Stacia and Charlie run back to fetch the crippled puppy. Horace catches the puppy, but Charlie bites him on the leg, causing him to scream in pain and drop the puppy. Stacia catches the puppy.]

Charlie: Stacia, never mind standing up to your uncle; we don’t have the time! I’ll take care of him! You just give that puppy back to his mother and keep going without me!

[Stacia runs with the puppy so as to return him to his mother. Meanwhile, Horace punches Charlie in the nose; however, Charlie then pounces on him. He pins Horace to the ground.]

Horace: [to his men] Men, get the slaves! And bring my niece back to me, ‘cause she’s grounded forever now! I’ll take care of the Plague Dog myself! [he tries kicking him away to the “walls” of the divided river, but Charlie lands on his back feet and leaps at him again. Apparently, to catch up with Itchy and the others, Charlie runs after them, as he’d been fighting Horace to distract him from taking the crippled puppy.]

[The five men run after Itchy, Stacia, and the dogs. Eventually, Stacia, Itchy, Carface, Killer, and the other dogs end up on the other side of the river all the way to the other side of the river.]

Itchy: If only I had the miracle dog tag?

Stacia: The what?

Itchy: It’s a dog tag used to perform miracles, but it’s only to be used to help others in need when a situation cannot be taken care of without a miracle.

[Suddenly, Itchy, Stacia, the slaves, and Horace’s men are raised up. Though this is not seen, Charlie was using the miracle dog tag to raise them and put them on the dry land above the river. Why include Horace’s men? You’ll see. Suddenly, Horace’s men are frozen like statues.]

[Meanwhile, Horace tries to see what Charlie’s using, but he hides it.]

Horace: What was that?

Charlie: Nothing! [runs off to catch up with the others, but also to get away from Horace.]

[On the land, Stacia, Itchy, and the dogs are dragging their feet in the dirt, writing “SOS”.]

Horace: Okay, Plague Dog, your days are numbered! [takes out a match box and reaches for a match.] You are so gonna pay forever! [pauses at the moment of keeping his hand with a match away] And you, Stacia, because you have snuck out of here despite being grounded, are grounded forever! You shall never see either of your parents again!

Stacia: Uncle Horace, family or not, because I still live with my parents, you have no authority over me! You have no right to abuse those animals, or to let them go hungry or thirsty! That made it right for me to nourish them!

Horace: That does it! Defying me for the last time! I’m gonna burn you both! [starts to strike the match, but then looks up in shock because…]

Annabelle: [off-screen] Halt! [she flies from the heavens] You will not harm any of these!

Horace: Who are you to butt into my business?

Annabelle: I am Annabelle, the Archangel Dog of Heaven, and this is my business!

Horace: Go away! Those weaklings belong to me, and it’s all his fault [points to Charlie] my son is dead!

Annabelle: No… every living thing belongs to himself, including pets, so they can decide for themselves… and another thing, Charles warned you it would happen, and you refused his warnings, so losing your son was your fault! And one more thing, Horace… [uses her miracle to raise Horace and Charlie up] … you have guests. [she extends her paw, causing Horace to see this.]

[Police helicopters arrive and land. Policemen from them have come to take away Horace’s men.]

Horace: Not the police…

[He and Charlie are set down on the ground.]

Charlie: Yes. The police. It serves you right.

[As Horace’s men are taken into the helicopters, Charlie uses the miracle dog tag to unfreeze them and to put the divided regions of the river back into one.]

Horace: [having heard the splash, he looks back and screams] No! No!!!

Charlie: Where’s the gratitude? At least you’re alive!

[Two of the policemen arrive to arrest Horace. One of them extends a gun at him, making Horace put his hands up.]

Policeman: [to Horace, off-screen] You’re under arrest, Horace Howard, for dognapping, animal abuse, and deforestation.

Horace: That dog cursed us!

Policewoman: Save your stories for the judge!

Horace: [being dragged away] No! No! NO!!!!!!!!!!!

Charlie: Yes. [to Annabelle] Thanks, Annabelle.

Itchy, Stacia, and the Dogs: Yes. Thank you.

Annabelle: Oh, pish. Think nothing of it. [to Charlie] You did all the work, Charles Barkin, and you did it very well. [raises her paw. A bubble appears and surrounds Charlie, Itchy, the dogs, and Stacia. This is done to take them to their homes in a flash.] Have a safe travel. [The bubble zooms away]

Carface: Hear that? We’re going home, aren’t we?

Charlie: Yes, Carface, straight home.

Annabelle: [voice-over] Unknown to everyone, including Charles and Itchy, but known only to me, Horace and his men were sentenced to getting rid of their oil palm seedlings and replanting the forests they destroyed, with a promise that if they committed even one crime, whether it was a misdemeanor or a felony, they would be sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary. As for Stacia, she was reunited with her mother, and she would eventually work at an animal shelter. Charles was reunited with Sasha and their puppies. Oh! And he repaid Ricky a $10 loan, and he didn’t have to pay him any interest whatsoever. Itchy went back to being reunited with Bess, Carface and Killer started running a bone bank (bones were the currency for dogs), and all of the other dogs were reunited with their families. And what about any surviving children of the palm oil workers? Well, at least any with mothers were reunited with them, whereas any without were sent to an orphanage.

[Back to the Heavens. Annabelle is still reading the story to the Angel Puppies. Janus is obviously asleep from boredom.]

Annabelle: And that’s the end of the story. [she closes the book and waves to us, and so do the rest of the angel puppies. Zoom out slowly. Charlie and Itchy appear and wink at us.]
