Literature Text

(In an alternate universe, where, as a cub, Ricky the Lion is in Bunnyburrow. A 9-year-old Judy Hopps [wearing her white-and-pink striped T-shirt with a carrot on it, blue pants, and a blue pleated skirt, and of course, goes barefoot] sees an 8-year-old Ricky the Lion [wearing round-framed glasses, a cyan T-shirt, blue jeans, white socks, and brown sandals] moping on the bench...)

YOUNG JUDY: Hi, Ricky. What's wrong?

YOUNG RICKY: This is so omitting. I can't whistle. My brother could whistle when he was five, and so could my sister when she was six. But here I am, an eight-year-old cub, and I can't do it.

YOUNG JUDY: You know, Ricky, I could be a good role model for you. You know how my parents say it's going to be impossible for me, a bunny, to become a police officer?

YOUNG RICKY: Yeah, but I think you might make a good one, but why wouldn't they believe you can be a cop?

YOUNG JUDY: Well, because there were none before... which means, I'll have to be the first one.

YOUNG RICKY: What of it?

YOUNG JUDY: Well, I am determined to reach my goal, and I am gonna keep on trying! And as for whistling, so should you. Persevere. Keep trying. Try everything.

YOUNG RICKY: I do, but it doesn't sound right. Let me tell you.

:sing: "Anyone can whistle,"
That's what they say.
"Easy."
"Anyone can whistle
Any old day.
Easy."

"It's all so simple.
Relax. Let go. Let fly."
So, someone tell me why can't I?

I can plug my finger
Into a leak.
Easy.
I can climb a plum tree,
Any old week.
Easy.

What's hard is simple.
What's natural comes hard.
Maybe you can show me
How to let go,
Lower my guard,
Learn to be free.
Maybe if you whistle,
Whistle for me.

It's all so simple.
Relax, let go, let fly.
So, someone tell me,
Why can't I?

Whistle to a dragon,
Then it will fall.
Easy.
Whistle to a hero,
Trumpets and all.
Easy.

What's hard is simple.
What's natural comes hard.
Maybe you can show me
How to let go,
Lower my guard,
Learn to be free.
Maybe if you whistle,
Whistle for me.

Maybe if you whistle...
Whistle for me.
This is a tribute to :iconkendallcollins:. He and I tend to have an alternate universe in which Judy Hopps and I meet as kids. In this one, because I couldn't dance a tango (still don't know how), read Greek (still can't), or slay a dragon (impossible for there to even be one. Any real dragon is just someone in a costume or just a sculpture), I replace it with some different lyrics (the first time).

I wonder how Judy will react to the song.

"Anyone Can Whistle" from the musical of the same title © Stephen Sondheim... new lyrics by me.

NOTE: I didn't know this song or hear of this musical as a kid.
